In a move aimed at bolstering their depth and potentially giving a talented prospect a chance to crack their roster, the Washington Capitals have signed forward Xavier Bourgault to a one-year, two-way contract. The 21-year-old Canadian forward was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the second round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft but has been traded to the Capitals as part of a larger deal. Bourgault has shown promise in his junior and minor league careers, scoring 64 goals and 145 points in 137 games with the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League and the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League. With his new contract, Bourgault will provide the Capitals with an additional scoring threat and a potential call-up option for the upcoming season.
