Gary Bettman’s comment on the playoff format of “It gives us a sensational first round. Probably the best playoff first round in any sport” really makes me wonder just how much he seems to think a playoff format that peaks early is better for hockey. Cannibalizing strong division, guaranteeing two of COL/DAL/MIN will be gone by the third round. Unless Utah goes on a Cinderella run, there is effectively no chance of an all-Central conference finals. Throw in a recent run of not so great conference finals (1 game 7 since 2019) and the Cup Finals not getting the best possible matchups in recent years…. What exactly is the NHL trying to do here? Ideally, this season could be well suited for a pair of all division conference finals (Dallas vs Colorado or Tampa vs Buffalo) instead of what could be another pair of 5 game series if we don’t get some wild card team from the stronger divisions making a run. Arguably the best conference finals ever was literally an all division matchup (1994 Devils-Rangers) submitted by /u/AlbertJBundy [link] [comments]
