After years of watching little hockey, I recently returned because my daughter started to watch. During the IIHF tournament, I was sickened to see Ryan Lindgren smash Evan Bouchard in the face. Bouchard was unconscious when he hit the ice. I was even more sickened when much of the fan reaction was "he should have kept his head up". It took about 30 seconds of research on the internet to find that Scott Stevens had ended multiple careers with concussion injuries including superstars Paul Kariya and Eric Lindros. The league's response was to promptly induct him into the hall of fame when he retired. Surely, you might think, that was 20 years ago and things are much better today? If you think that, you're dead wrong. A 2019 study found that concussions occur in roughly 6 out of 100 games (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6602367/). And Boston University's CTE Center found that 95% of deceased NHL players had CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy). After Claude Lemieux's recent suicide, his family donated his brain the the CTE center. Draw your own conclusions. submitted by /u/CanadaDad61 [link] [comments]
